I would imagine that there are metal studs or rafters spaning from one side to another that the ceiling, or dry wall material is fastened to.

Unless you have a cathederal ceiling, this job should be very easy.

Some basic sTeps:

turn off all electricity if you have any ceiling fixtures that are powered by electricity.

Remove all furniture and stuff from below and tarp the flooring as this job is messy and you may get insulation on you.

Have your new rock ready, its either 1/4 inch width or 1/2.

Install it and you need two other helpers with screw guns ready.

Do your tape and bedding work. If its drywall

Do the texturing.

Now, you ceiling might just be paneling, I do not know, if it is, this is much easier to replace.
