Space around face of a fireplace?

I have a painted brick fireplace in my family room that I'd like to cover with drywall. I'll be doing this when I drywall the entire room which currently has wood paneling on the walls. I know I should leave a surround of non-flammable materials around the face of fire box itself. I plan to either leave the brick exposed there or put on a tile border. I have looked through the Uniform Building Code, but I haven't been able to find how wide this surround needs to be. Does anyone know how wide this needs to be or a resource where I could find out?
Thanks for your help!
