I think you are on the right track. I would use construction adhesive between the osb and the joists and then a nail gun with ring shank 6p nails. You can rent a nail gun and small compressor for maybe $50-$60 bucks (guess) for a day and it will really make things go faster. Whatever you do, use EYE protection, in case you mess up, so you don't get a nail through your eyeball... I would do the blocking as you described. Stagger them a couple inches every joist bay so that you can nail through the joists into the end grain of the blocks. It is important to get solid nailing near the top and bottom of the blocks. I would use a framing nailgun with at least 16p. (maybe 20p if they make them) to reach through 1/5" Plus the 1/2" osb = 2" total. Have everything pre-cut as much as possible so that your rental time will be as short as possible. good luck!
