I happen to 'stumble' on your Follow-up.

To answer your question, I suggest you paint. The work involved in staining the floor isn't worth it. When you apply poly, you have to sand and vacume EXTREMELY WELL between coats. And since you're gonna be covering up anyways, just prime and paint.

Visit your local Paint Retailer (found in the Yellow Pages under PAINT - RETAIL) and tell them what you're doing. Hopefully, you have a plywood subfloor. If it's anything else, you're gonna have to have plywood installed OVER it before you can install anything else, except carpet.

PS: Prime with 1 coat and paint on 2 top-coats. Tell the Retailer how long you plan on going with this 'plan' until you have your new floor put in.
