Actually, there are little clips you can get or make to attach to bottoms of I-beams. With wood in a damp basement, you are going to get shrinking and swelling, and eventually a tight fit may not be enough. I would further wager that, outside of door frames and so on, there isnít anything you can do with wood in a non-structural application that you canít do with steel as well or better.

Drywall is a little different. Build the wall, hang drywall, build an adjoining wall, etc. I use the 2: wide rails along the sides of the basement since 2" rigid foam board fits right in, making for a very nice and insulated basement.

And the droppings can be recycled for MONEY. Try that with wood.
