Yes, it can be done and for the most part looks OK.
If I were to do this, I would paint in the spring before the weather became too hot. The siding is going to expand in the heat and when the weather gets cold, it will contract and leave lines on every lap joint where the paint did not get to when you painted.
I would paint the siding as close to the same color as what you had so they won't show as much.
You should look at the seems this week to see how much contraction you have now. This will give you a good idea of what I mean.
Don't be surprised if the siding starts to bow or buckle because the paint won't allow the siding to move. (this is rare with aluminium siding because it is stronger than vinyl but, it does happen.
