Somethin Doesn't Add Up....

In reply to 36" vs. 42" kitchen cabinets with 9' ceilings by Kkatie on October 2nd, 2000 02:32 PM [Go to top of thread]

Normally the distance from the floor to the top of the counter top is 36" There is usually an 18" space from the counter top to the bottom of the wall cabinet. A 42" wall cabinet will bring you up to 96" which is 8 feet. (36 + 18 + 42 = 96) nominal dimensions.
With your 9 foot ceilings you will still have a 12" gap from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling.
In order to have no space above your 42" cabinets you need either an 8' ceiling or a 12" soffit above to fill in the space to your 9' ceiling. (Or 54" wall cabinets)
Anyway, I agree with you. Cabinets all the way to the ceiling look nice.
