You missed Father's Day and Christmas is too far away.
Go to any reputable book store and pick up a copy of Reader's Digest or Time-Life's book(s) on Home Remodeling. Pre-read them to find out which book has the info you need on refinishing a basement. This is a good idea to do because you sound like you need to know MORE about this type of job. It's not as straight forward as you might think.
For example, does the basement have a musty odor? Do any of your walls leak or have cracks? Are you putting in a bathroom? And so on. Since you're asking the type of question that you're asking, it may pay to have a pro come in and at least give you an estimate, or 2 or 3. He can do the 'rough work' and you can try and do the finish work. You can save some $$$ there. Just plan out how you want to USE the room. (Lights, outlets, cable, phone, 'access panels', and so on.) These issues alone may need a pro.
My best to ya and hope this helps.
PS: A pro is less likely to 'miss' any of the rough-out-issues ...
