I'm not a Chimney Sweeper but a couple of thoughts ...

I would clean from the top down; not the bottom up. Gravity is a problem in the bottom up approach. When you're through, get a wet vac or something to vacume up whatever residue you you brush off. I'd also use a brush that's at least an inch or 2 wider than the chimney (23"). I don't think using one that's any narrower would work well. You don't need to use any chemicals in the process.

Lastly, I'd think about putting a glass door on that fireplace opening unless you have $$$ to throw away. Nothing else to offer, my best to ya and hope this helps.
