In reply to outside yard light not working by jim and janet on September 7th, 2000 05:43 AM [Go to top of thread]

jim and janet,

First, check to see that the breaker wasn't 'tripped'. If it was, make sure no one is 'messing' with the fixture and reset it. (Turn it on, then off, then on again.) Then, turn on the switch. If that doesn't work, ...

Second, whenever working with the fixture, turn the BREAKER off; NOT just the switch! If you need to 'test' the line, do so. It can be done at the switch. When the wires are exposed, have the breaker momentarily set to see if you have juice (with the switch OFF) with a volt meter. Then, turn the switch ON and see if you have juice coming from the the switch by using the volt meter. If the results are YES and YES, then test the fixture itself with the meter. (This way, the LAST thing you have to do is climb the pole.) If the fixture is working, then the bulb may be bad OR it may not be the proper one.

If the fixture is bad, again with the breaker OFF, cleaning the contact inside the fixture is maybe all you need to do. Sometimes, the contacts get a little corroded. If you can 'test' the bulb elsewhere, THAT would be the simplest test to do. Other than that, maybe some others have some 'tips' as to why this type of bulb (and outdoor fixture) have 'problems'. My best to ya and hope this helps.

Jay J
