You're in for a lot of work, especially with the countertops. Having the proper equipment makes this job turn out right especially if you have rounded edges and want any type of 'exotic' profile. (The bathroom job isn't too bad but you're doing the right thing by checking it out.)
You can start by going to a book store. They have remodeling books there. Time/Life and Reader's Digest, among others, publish specific books on these subjects. Spend some of that $$$ you're gonna save on a good book or 2. You didn't say what you want to replace the existing kitchen counter top with but that's neither here nor there. Just see to it that the book(s) you end up buying has what you want in it.
