Dear Mark: I personally wouldn't solder closer than about 7-8ins unless you wrap the inlet & outlet with a wet rag. How about just using those new-fangled things called flexes,(copper or stainless) which have 3/4 female pipe threads on each end or 3/4 thread in one end and 3/4 sweat on the other; piece of cake.
