My wife and I bought our home about eleven years ago and had the same problem with smoke. What we did was to paint every room (whcih needed it anyone,,the 1970 colors had to go) We also rented a steam cleaning carpet machine and did all the rugs,,twice. Whatever wall good not be painted my wif scroubed with water and amonia and then cleaned it all up with Murphys Oil Soap. It was a lot of work, but we really loved the house and did what was needed to get rid of the smoke. We alos cleaned all the light fixtures that were crusted with nicoten. There may be better things on the market now help you rid the smell,,,hope this info helps...
