Sliding Glass Door Install

Posted by mike salo on October 21st, 2000 09:07 AM

Hello, Folks
I just called a contractor for a job estimate, and although I realize that
Labor and material costs have risen over the years, I was blown away by
the estimate I received.
I have a 3 bedroom, wood frame, Ranch style house in Central California.
I have a 6.0 sliding glass door set, complete, that I wanted installed,
and the labor involved would consist of removing a 3.0 sash window,
enlarging the rough hole, installing a 4x10 header over the opening,
installing the track kit and windows. The exterior is 1x wood siding,
the interior, half inch drywall. I'm getting old, but I still
estimate this to be one days' labor for one man, and with me
providing the window kit, contractor supplied materials should run no more than
$100 (Header, Flashing, Sealant, 1 4x8 drywall panel)

Tell me I'm wrong.... The estimate I received was for
$1290, with a kicker of $400 if I failed to provide the window kit
at the proper time.

Am I THAT far out of touch? If basic Handyman/Carpenter skills
are now worth $1100 a day, then I won't bother saving money to
send my son to Medical School. Any opinions on this bid?
