Thanks for the tips -- and apologies for the duplicate post (over an hour later? not sure how).

There's little bounce to the attic floor currently, and it's been used for storage for at least 30 years, as well as a farmhand "apartment" from about 1900 to maybe WWII (complete with wood stove), and there's been no deflection so far. I was hoping for a hard and fast rule to substitute for experience, of which I have very little.
