Sink hole mystery

The hole is located about two inches below the center of the faucet plate (the rectangular metal piece that covers the underparts). It is definately not in the part of the sink where water would ever be as the sink rises up in the back toward the faucet -- kind of like a backsplash...even if it has the faucet on it.
