We need to be careful in terminal designation. The "hot" wire is connected to the END of the switch that has the single screw (disregarding the ground), and the "traveler" wires are connected to the END of the switch that has the 2 screws.
If the "sides" are used to identify the single or double terminals, the 3-way circuit will not work correctly.
