Shower tile over plaster??

Posted by Scott Glenn on December 12th, 2000 07:39 AM

I've got a 40+ year old house with plaster (over drywall) walls. Should I tile directly over the plaster or should I use one of the backerboards to eliminate moisture concerns.

Also, the stems for my new shower faucets are not long enough to extend through the drywall, plaster, backerboard and tile. If the backerboard is a must, should I tear out the plaster and "replace" with the backerboard for the area to be tiled?

Any other tips well appreciated!
