Shower - coroded pipe to faucet must be replaced

I own a house built in '54 ... nothing has been done in the bath/shower. The tub faucet has a valve to pull up for shower. Water began to leak behind the faucet. When I went to remove the faucet, it turn out the the threads of the pipe from the shower to the faucet had corroded and rusted away. It fell apart in my hand. So, now I have to replace the piple from the shower to the faucet.

Can that be done from the bath tub? If so how? Just try to turn the pipe counter clock wise and hope nothing else breaks? Is there a technique? Or is it necessary to pull out the tiles and install all new pipes behind the bath tub walls?
