Kevin, two things come to mind.

If you are changing the configuration, and the drain needs to be relocated, consider cutting off or disconnecting the trap from below, since it will eventually be moved. (If you remove the trap, be sure to put a temporary cap on the end)

Or, as you would not want to add back in a small strip of MR drywall at the bottom, cut the drywall back a few feet up the wall, or if it was installed horizontally remove it up to the 4' joint.
