How about some 3/4" plywood with half round molding glued and tacked onto the edges? This is what I am going to use in my closets. I have old fashioned molding strips to hold it up. You could also buy brackets. I used 1 5/8" chrome steel tubing for closet rods. This is available at most home centers. I had to cut the tubing myself with a hacksaw, and it comes in 8' lengths, so you need to plan ahead. Personally I think wire looks cheesy, and melamine will fall apart sooner or later.
