Holly, the ejector pump is in a pit like your sump pump except it would have the basement toilet, tub, lav, and washer hooked up to it. It is sealed with a vent pipe to pump sewage and is a heavier duty pump to be able to handle the solids that come from a toilet. Sewage ejector pumps are required when your sewer line going out of the house to your city sewer line is above the floor level of the basement. Somebody must be running something somewhere to set it off.
