Jim, The determining factor is the size of the largest motor that you will start under loaded conditions. Typicaly this is a 2 or three ton heat pump or air conditioner. Starting this motor will cause a momentary flicker or voltage dip. Lots of calculations can be done, however, from a practical standpoint 4/0 cable will usually produce adequate service voltage, and acceptable flicker. The difference in cost between 2/0 and 4/0 cable would be less than the $600.
