If you have 3 water heaters in series the warm water of the first incoming one will keep the thermostat of the second one off until the second tank is cold enough and so on, so the reheating while using the hot water will be limited moreso than if you pipe them in parallel. When they are piped and balanced in parallel, all 3 tanks would supply all their hot water and be reheating quicker than if they are in series.
