As the owner of a small security company, I come accros your problem quite often and have a detailed description on my website ( under "free alarms". The main thing you must do is determine if you own the sytem. Most companies that install these systems that require monitoring contracts maintain ownership of the equipment. This leaves a couple of options, 1. Ask them to remove the system(most will not because the service trip will costs them more than the equipent is worth) 2. If they leave the equipment, call a smaller locally owned company to reprogram the sysem if possible(your unit may have a installer lock out enabled that will prevent this) 3. If the system is locked out, the control panel and keypad must be replaced. (existing contacts, motion sensors, etc. can still be used). This will cost around $200.00 but you will own the system and be able to choose if you want the system local or monitored and give you the opportunity to choose your service provider.
