Jennifer is exactly right if the scratch has much depth. The problem is in saying what "much depth" means. An easier way, if there isn't much depth to the scratches is to use the crayon sticks that Minwax and other companies make for filling small depressions. They are tinted to match various wood shades. These are great for filling nail holds in trim moldings that are stained and/or clear finished.
