First... its a floor not a piano.

Second YES!

If the house is "new" the floor is most likely pre-finished or finished in place. Purchase some color putty at the local lumber supply(NOT WAX STICKS, NOT WOOD FILLER). You can mix colors to match, you will have to play with them to get the color right. Press into the scratch and buff with an old t-shirt, Then topcoat.

If the floor was finished in place contact a local floor finisher and see what typical Topcoat is used locally, if it is Bacca/Glitsa Swedish finish, or Senteco get a spray can of finish from him and touch up over the putty.

If the floor was pre-finished find a place to test some urethane on the floor like a closet, and see how it reacts, Try both waterborne and oil.

If the house is older it may have a oil or wax finish. What ever you find do not sand through the stain or patina on the wood, you are just asking for trouble.

Learn how to take care of your floors cleaning and maintenance and it will out last you.
