Scott, how was the old light/fan wired?

to the two pair of black/white wires in the electrical ceiling box? your assumption is that the two pair of 12-2 with ground wires are each coming from a separate wall switch. did you verify your assumption some how other than hooking them up like you did to see if they worked? It would be handy if you had a volt meter so that you could actually verify that both pair of wires in the ceiling J-box are both off with both switches in the off position and then verify one at a time that there is 110 volts AC on each pair as their respective switches are turned on. Be careful to not shock yourself if you are a novice at messing with electrical circuits. sounds like to me that one of the pair wires in the ceiling J box may be always hot. and you really did not have individual control over the original light and fan. Please give us more info. on the original setup and wiring for the old light/fan. LJ
