Sanding old wood floors

We have hardwood floors in a newly renovated 3 season porch (now 4 seasons) that have been in the house over 100 years. they are good condition but we would like to sand them after the work has been complete. The floor used old box nails that have a nice old look to them. the builder says they have to be set & filled in order to sand the floors. therefor losing the old look. Is this actually the case or can we save the old look of the nails?
