BAM, there probably is not going deep enough now to be a problem structurally from what you have said, but if it is bad enough that you are concerned, it sure would not hurt to do something about it for cosmetic reasons if nothing else. Scrape and wire brush it to get rid of any loose particles and then follow with a coat or 2 of Rustoleum. I would definately apply this with a brush since overspray would be a big problem. Be sure to follow manufacturers directions and safety precautions and wear a dusk mask and eye protection when you scrape and wire brush.
