Place a framing square against the wall and the doorpost {vertical door jamb}. The square should touch the horizontal jamb [or header] place the rossette on the square against the wall. The rosette should now be square with both jambs. The casing reveal should be one half the difference of the casing and the rosette. A 4 inch rosette with a 3 1/2 inch casing should have a 1/4 inch reveal. A good "eye" is very important, most doors will not be 100% level. Use your eye, it's more important for trim to look good.
