Root Removal From Foundation

Posted by Gabe on October 24th, 1999 12:34 PM

My wife and I recently made our first home purchase, an older home (built in 1908) in great condition... except for one large hardwood tree (maple or elm, not sure which) positioned very close to the house. One of the large horizontal roots has pushed up the porch foundation quite noticably over the years and is pretty well established under the porch. The main structure of the house is on floor joists spaced 12" apart, however the front porch (approx 5' from the house's front wall) is a standard foundation.

I would like to remove the tree before any further damage to the house occurs, but I am not sure how to do this without damaging the porch (or the house!) from re-settling.

If anyone has experienced this problem or knows of a possible solution, I would greatly appreciate some advice on what steps to take.

Thank you,
