Roofing Materials

Posted by Bob Shimane on April 28th, 1998 01:39 AM

I need a new roof on my 20 year old ranch style house in San Jose, CA. The home is about 2260 sq. ft. on a single story.

I have investigated cedar shakes, Cemwood shakes, Dura Loc metal roofs and Monier Prem. Duralite and composite roofs such as Celotex Presidential and GAF Grand Sequoia. I like the look of the cedar shake and of the Cemwood.

Will my home be able to support the weight of the Cemwood which is 6 lbs. per sq. ft.? I have been told that I have a 3800 sq. ft roof. The rafters are 2 x 6.

How about cedar shakes? If they are treated, are they good? I read some literature on the Meeker products and they are warranted from 30 to 50 years, depending upon the size product used. Everyone tells me to stay away from cedar shakes. What do yo think?

Any information, comment or advice would be apprectiated.

Thanks. Bob Shimane, San Jose, CA
