We live in a 100+ year old row house in the city. We have almost no yard and rather than buy a new house just so I can have somewhere to do some serious gardening. Thus, we are contemplating having a roof garden be constructed on top of our flat-roofed house (i.e., on top of the 3rd floor)and a roof deck, maybe even leaning towards a roof garden, off the 3rd floor (on the 2nd floor roof).
Where should we start? We both tend to think we need to consult a structural engineer first to make sure our roofs can handle them and, if not what (if anything) needs to be done to secure the roofs.
Is the second step, talking to a landscape/garden designer to help us with designing a garden that the "deck" can support?
Do you have any ballpark figures on how much we would need to spend to have safe, sturdy roof gardens installed?
Any advice you could provide us would be much welcomed.
