your return air vents are crucial to the proper operation of your HVAC system...generally the more you have, the quieter the system...if you block the heating not enough air will pass over your heater, overheating it and causing damage to your heat exchanger. this could cause co2 poisoining or a cooling if insufficeint air passes over the evaporator will create a VERY large ice ball..until you shut it down, then you'll have a nice wet mess to clean up. someone went to alot of trouble to install several return air vents...a nice custom system. i suggest you contact Reggio registers and look into nice brass or wood registers and grilles....I believe they have a web site, try reggio registers under search
