We live in an older home built around 1940. We are updating the kitchen and in a previous attempt to update it another owner put wall paper on the ceiling. It is now falling down. We would like to redo the ceiling in some fashion but behind the wallpaper are the ceiling boards we think are the original ceiling. We have heard of the term "battanburg" used in ref. to the ceiling but we can not locate a ref. to this in any of our research. If you are familiar with this term could you explain what it is and advise us of how to restore the ceiling if possible. you can pull off the wallpaper but it does not come off evenly...We also are installing new wainscotting around the lower half of the walls in the kitchen. Would it be possible to use this same material on the ceiling? Our porch ceiling has it?
