The first thing to consider with antiques is what refinishing will do to the value of the piece. If you want to enjoy the piece and it has no great monetary value, then have a good time and I hope you get great results. I have seen numerous methods for restoring the zinc finishes (some faux)in numerous publications and you have the option of replacing the tins. Check some of the books at your book store for restoring techniques and if you decide to replace the tins, I like dealing with VanDykes for some of my restoration projects. The pie safe tins are at:
