I wouldn't say it sounds hillbillyish. I currently am working with a pole barn/ post frame builder and we are in the process of moving into the "pole barn housing" market. At this time our main income is from buildings mainly because people think that pole structures are for farm and commercial buildings. The main structure is built like a regular pole building but, you can use regular siding, shingled or tin roofing, windows and doors from your local menards/home depot or any other source. The main attraction to us is the fact that they can be built cheaper than a normal stick built home thus passing the savings on to the consumer.
We think post frame will become more popular because of that fact alone.
Believe me, these can be built to look like a "regular home" but less expensive.
It is hard to find info on this subject because of the lack of knowledge about post frame structures but I think that will start to change.
Here is one link that you can look at: http://www.paynesvillearea.com/marketplace/polebarn.html
Hope this helps you out.
