replacing deck boards

I would like to replace some deck boards on a deck that was not treated very often. Quite a few boards are splintered pretty bad. The boards were put down with spiral type nails instead of screws. Also the deck is low and access from underneath would be difficult. What is the best way to remove these boards. I think that if I can snap the nail heads off I might be able to pry the boards up. Then I can drive the remainder of the nail down. Does this make sense? Does anyone have experience doing this? Thanks for your help.
