go checkout this DIY how to explanation...it pretty much matches what Steve has walked you thru but may have some other helpful tips too.

one other thing, if your house is old it maynot have water supply cutoffs for the hot and cold supply lines feeding the faucet, so in this situation you will need to turn off water to the whole house via the main shutoff valve at the exit from your water meter. If you have to do this then get the shutoff valves installed onto the pipes coming out of the wall or floor whichever is your situation so you can then turn water back on to the rest of the house. I have found in most case a basin wrench is needed to get the fauceet off the lavatory sink too Hope this helps...LJ
