replacing basement foundation walls with steel beams to open up basement space.

Posted by kyle on February 11th, 2001 10:46 PM

I live in a Two story Center Entrance Colonial 100% brick home in detroit michigan. I have two masonary foundation walls in my basement that separates the laundry room from the recreation room. This gives a choppy basement. I really would like to open the basement up to one large open area. What can be done with the foundation walls? I have heard they can be removed and replaced with steel beams. Can they be removed and replaced with steel beams? If so, how is it done? How much would something like that cost? Is this a relative easy process for a profession? What are the pitfalls? Who or what type of tradesmen should i contact to do something like this?

Thanks Kyle
