Oh shucks! The ugly tile on the floor in front of my fireplace broke. Since it's the same tile that's on my surround, we'll have to replace the entire thing.
I want to use a flat field stone on the surround and the floor in front of the fireplace. There is no raised hearth.
Is it possible to use an adhesive to set the stones directly on top of the tile? The tile is original to the fireplace, so I'm not sure what's behind it, but I doubt it's brick.
Also, is there a standard that looks correct (not talking building codes) for the width of the mantle vs. the width of the surround?
Our wood mantle has a crown molding look at the top. So, it's wider at the top than the bottom.
The surround extends beyond the edges of the mantle, 4in at top 8 at the bottom.
This just doesn't look right to me. It looks off balance. Any ideas how to correct this without replacing the mantle? I really like the mantle.
