Replace Pocket Door w/ Pre-Hung

Posted by Scott K. on January 20th, 2003 12:31 PM

Access from my living quarters to the garage is through a single panel pocket door. The pocket door obviously does not seal well and allows cold air leakage to the rest of the house. Secondly, I doubt this hollow core door would meet existing code which I believe calls for a solid door.

I would like to tear this door out and replace with a prehung unit. I would appreciate if anyone may have some insight on what steps I'll have to go through. Will I need to tear out drywall to remove the pocket door? If yes, do I need to tear out both sides or is one side sufficient? Assuming that the header must extend from the closed door stop to the open door stop approximately 3 ft within the wall do I need only to install a stud from the header to the floor in order to frame an opening for the prehung unit.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Scott
