Repairing Broken Bannister (Hand Rail)

The wooden railing between the dining area and great room was partially dislodged (male horseplay of course). The main support beam was partially dislodged from the floor board.

The railing is 90" long and 37" high, with 15 "poles" between the main support beam and the wall, where it is also secured. The Great Room floor is sunken 6" below the Dining Room floor. The original anchor holes appear to have nails in them rather than screws.

How does one repair and strengthen this main support beam. Thanks for any help!
