An air set refractory cement firmly pressed into the cracks should suffice, temporarily(must be cleaned and raked out),however, why did the firebrick crack?settling in the fireplace,or maybe inadequate construction?. Get the fireplace inspected by a certified solid fuel technician or proficient mason as I have been seeing some fireboxes that are laid with regular mortar and/or laid sailor style. both of wich can lead to early failure, also insure that the cap is covered and sealed and no water is entering the firebox from above.more details available at my website.------http:/
