Repair of Broken Brace in Truss

Posted by Dan on April 26th, 2001 02:58 PM

We're building a new house in Texas, with the 2x4 truss construction that is typical down here. One of the 2x4 braces has a large knot, where the brace has broken. I have brought the matter to the attention of the contractor for repair, but my question is: What type of repair is acceptable in this case? Do they need to remove the broken brace completely and put a new one in its place? Can they just nail another 2x4 between the load-bearing beams of the truss? I would think this would not provide as much strength... They have "repaired" a different cracked brace by simply nailing another section of 2x4 over the cracked part - but the 2x4 patch doesn't even go to the load bearing beams - I am having them fix this truss as well.

If this description is too confusing I can email a sketch....
