Repainting Painted Woodwork

Posted by Suzanne Pickens on June 24th, 2001 04:48 PM

My newly acquired 1935 Col. Rev. with Craftsman influences need lots of TLC. I know all the interior woodwork was originally stained and varnished. I am considering stripping one or two rooms, but want to repaint over several old coats in most rooms including all kitchen cabinetry. I have one thin, dubiously applied coat peeling off in sheets in the kit and some chipping off to the original wood. I assume I have oil based paint in place, maybe some lead based. Paint store man suggested "just roughing up the surface a little" and using acrylic/laytex. I considered liquid sandpaper. Any advice on prep and type of paint would be appreciated. Thanks!
