We just moved into our old house (built in 1868)recently and decided to try to smooth out the textured ceiling in the living room and dining room. The ceiling underneath the texture is plaster. The previous owner informed us she had had it done about five years ago, mainly to cover up several obvious cracks. We started sanding the ceiling with a hand-held sander when suddenly several hairline cracks formed across the entire width of the ceiling. We're hesitant to continue further, especially since the hairline cracks extend to a plaster medallion that is original to the house. Is it a good idea to remove the texture, and if so, how do we go about doing so? Is the ceiling now compromised as a result? How do we go about fixing the cracks? Thanks in advance for any information!
