the easiest and cleanest way i have found to remove this type of texture is with a tool made by is a powered drywall sander...and should be available for rent at your local rental center...the tool uses a round sanding disc attatched to a pivoting head w/ a long handle which connects to a shop-vac hose (most rental centers rent the vac w/ the tool which captures over 95% of the dust)

just get the coarsest paper you can get and sand you get closer to the wall you will want to use a finer grit of paper to avoid sanding through the paper on your drywall...

this is a great way to remove the texture w/o a big mess for a reasonable rental rate of $25-40 dollars a day
