removing sticky residue from hardwood floors.

HELP! Can anyone help me find a product to remove a sticky residue on hardwood floors? Perferably a product without an odor or having to wear a respirator. The house was built in 1959. We removed the newer carpet and the foam padding. Under the foam padding there was cheese cloth, then under the cheese cloth was a dark sticky rubbery substance. We wet the
substance with a damp mop put in Murphy's wood soap. Once it was damp, we scrapped the substance with a plastic scrapper. The substance then looked like coffee grounds. There is now a sticky residue on the floor that we want to get up before we refinish the floors. The floors look like oak. Thanks for your help.
